The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy and safety of Traumeel S in controlling postoperative pain following surgical correction of hallux valgus.
Thirty consecutive patients scheduled for elective hallux valgus surgery at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Jerusalem, were assigned by week of operation to receive no treatment, intra-operative injection of Traumeel into the surgical wound or intra-operative injection and daily postoperative oral Traumeel tablets (PO). Outcomes measured were daily VAS score and total consumption of analgesics. Longitudinal analysis was conducted using SAS PROC MIXED.
Both single injection and injection + PO groups experienced lower pain scores than the placebo group (P = 0.02 and P = 0.05, respectively). The single injection group and the injection + PO groups did not differ significantly. Mean total consumption of analgesics was lower in both treatment groups than in the placebo group, but this difference did not reach statistical significance.
Traumeel S was effective in reducing pain after hallux valgus surgery, whether given as a single intra-operative injection or as injection followed by daily oral treatment. An RCT is in order to corroborate these results.
